If I don’t talk about my view of music it will be lost in time. This podcast will change as we go, but for now we will talk about the bands and music that impacted me.
We struck a nerve in the first video. I
was talking about music groups and looking at non-musical data
points. We talked about Nickleback’s tour/recording cycle and
compared it to Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and Black Sabbath to reveal
patterns. From that we can see there has been a shift in the time
frame for how often a popular group releases an album. The classic
’70s bands would typically release a new album every year or two.
Bands in today’s time will release an album every three years.
This
episode we will explore more of this type of information found in the
historic profiles of rock bands. We will look at a collection of
influential British rock bands to see how their ensemble format
informed their music. Then we can jam on whatever else we can gleam
from talking about the groups.
Ensemble format means how many
people are in your music group and who plays what. To a contemporary
composer, it has grander implications of what sound possibilities can
exist. It means what instruments can you paint with. In both cases,
this is very important to understand.
We will also look at the
pedigree/influence of these mentioned groups to see how they have
affected music history. I am very excited to be able to talk about
these groups: Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and
King Crimson.
You could say that I am branching into musicology when I talk about music in this way. I am not sure if that’s the best way to describe it, but either way I enjoy the process.
