Six Lines of Music No. 1

In Mainland Empire Records by newduereview

This is music from my orphan Youtube page Mainland Empire Records. I created this Youtube page 3 years age to house my contemporary compositions. In 2016 I decided that I wanted to digitize all my scores and have them available for streaming.

The music listed here is music I started to write in 2013. That was the year where I was preparing to go to university here in Vancouver. I was composing a lot of music during this time, and this composition series was the fruit that came of it.

It didn’t take long to compose, but it has taken over 6 years to finalize. After composing the material I let the music rest for 3 years until I came back to it for editing and upload. It has been another 3 years and now I feel it is time for a showcase. Bellow are all the movements of all six compositions in Six Lines of Music. This is technically my first major work. I could say this is Opus 1 as a sextet. I am not sure that is necessary now because Opus was to help catalog work. Now in contemporary times you can do that through a chronology. Dates are easy to find in digital works.

Schoenberg Companion Work

What I do think is necessary is for you to know the companion work that helped me complete this music. When I started composing this work I was finishing up a round of music history and I was studying Arnold Schoenberg.

What history commonly knows of Schoenberg was his dissonant style of music. Despite common knowledge Schoenberg was actually a romantic composer. One of the last true romantics born in the last half of the 19th century, he seemed to have am imbued sense of beauty and music intuition.

One of Schoenberg’s early compositions is a fine example of how dark and beautiful his music was. I used Transfigured Night as a guiding composition for Six Lines of Music. Schoenberg’s piece was a string sextet, and I decided that I would attempt to compose for the same instrumentation. A daunting task to say the least for the amateur I was back then. I did it none the less. I stayed up many nights composing and I finished far more than 13 pieces. In 2016 I was able to edit the work, and cut out whole pieces that did not fit. Once edited an uploaded the music has remained mostly untouched.

Before listening to my music check out Schoenbergs Transfigured night. Composed in 1899, it was thought to be one of the last romantic pieces to be written before the modern era.
